One last reminder that August 31st will be the deadline for SOHL to receive any youth instructor-helper bursary applications, workshop applications, and Volunteer Award nomination forms. Below you will find a letter that was sent in early July as it briefly describes these great opportunities. All forms are available on our Forms Page.
Please contact our office in case of any questions!
July 6 Letter:
Workshop applications are available for either Coordinating Agencies (MLAR/SIA - maximum grant awarded is $1,000) or for Heritage Language Schools (maximum grant awarded is $400). We encourage you to schedule the workshops as early in the school year as possible, so that teachers can apply the new skills they will learn at the workshop in the upcoming school year.
The Youth Heritage Language Instructor-Helper Bursary is aimed at youth between ages 12 and 18 that volunteer as instructor-helpers at their respective heritage language schools. The expectation is that they will provide between 50 and 70 hours of classroom assistance throughout the school year. Please note that due to the popularity of this program, preference will be given to new applicants. We strongly encourage schools to apply for a candidate who did not receive the bursary in the previous 2015/16 school year. Additionally, the application form and letters of reference must be signed by a non-relative of the applicant.
Each year, SOHL honours two individuals with its Volunteer Recognition Awards. One award is for a New Volunteer (four or less years volunteering) and one is for a Long-Term Volunteer (five or more years volunteering). Please take the time to nominate a deserving individual from your school. An outside panel of judges will select the recipients, and the awards will be presented at SOHL’s Annual Provincial Conference Banquet in Regina on October 29th, 2016. Once again, please ensure that the nominator is a non-relative of the nominee.
The application forms are also always available on SOHL’s website. Please review all of the guidelines and requirements for each program carefully, and make sure that applications are complete and include all relevant attachments. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
